Der amerikanische Regisseur, Drehbuchautor und Produzent John Singleton ist verstorben. Der 51-Jährige erlag den Folgen eines Schlaganfalls. Mit Filmen wie "Boyz N The Hood" und "Poetic Justice" prägte Singleton auch Generationen von Hiphop-Fans.

Oscar-Nominierungen & "New Black Cinema": John Singletons Gesamtwerk

John Singleton hat in seiner Karriere eher an einer übersichtlichen Anzahl von Filmen gearbeitet. Bereits sein Erstlingswerk "Boyz N The Hood" brachte ihm im Alter von 24 Jahren zwei Oscarnominierungen für die beste Regie und das beste Drehbuch ein.

Damit war Singleton der jüngste und zugleich erste afroamerikanische Regisseur, der für den Regie-Award nominiert wurde. Der Film mit Ice Cube, Laurence Fishburne und Cuba Gooding Jr. über das Leben in der Hood gilt als wegbereitend für ein neues und möglichst realistisches Kino aus einer afroamerikanischen Perspektive – das sogenannte "New Black Cinema".

Singleton setzte bei seinen Filmen überwiegend auf schwarze Darsteller und ermöglichte einigen Rappern und Musikern den Sprung auf die Kinoleinwand. Im Drama "Poetic Justice" spielt bekanntermaßen 2Pac an der Seite von Janet Jackson. In "Higher Learning" sehen wir wiederum Ice Cube. Das schauspielerische Können von Ludacris ist beispielsweise im Kassenschlager "2 Fast 2 Furious" zu bestaunen. Des Weiteren haben sich unter anderem Busta Rhymes ("Higher Learning" und "Shaft"), André 3000 ("Vier Brüder"), Q-Tip ("Poetic Justice") und Snoop Dogg ("Baby Boy") im filmischen Gesamtwerk von John Singleton verewigt. Als unabhängiger Produzent war er außerdem an "Hustle & Flow" beteiligt.

Zuletzt arbeitete Singleton vor allem für das amerikanische Fernsehen. Er produzierte die Drama-Serie "Snowfall", welche sich mit der Crack-Epidemie in Los Angeles Anfang der Achtziger beschäftigt. Mitte April dieses Jahres erlitt der Regisseur einen schweren Schlaganfall, von dem er sich nicht mehr erholte. Seine Familie entschied nun, die lebenserhaltenen Maßnahmen abzuschalten.

Not only did John make movies for us and our culture, he made one of the most iconic videos ever! It showed the world what Egyptians really looked like! I’m glad I told you while you were here in the physical but I’ll say it again, THANK YOU! May God bless the soul of John Singleton.
