Zu Beginn des Jahres wurde die Zusammenarbeit von Adidas mit Dragon Ball Z bekannt. Es folgten Modelle, die in Anlehnung an Boo designt wurden und auch Vegeta und Son Goku bekamen ihren eigenen Sneaker. Nicht alle Designs sorgten bei Sneaker-Liebhabern und Fans der japanischen Animeserie für Begeisterung. Der Hype war dennoch groß. 

Der Designer Walsh Design spekulierte unter anderem, wie eine Kollaboration mit Nike ausgesehen hätte. Daraufhin entwarf er bereits eine Version des VaporMax-Schuhs. Diesem beliebten Modell von Nike widmete sich nun ein weiterer Künstler besonders intensiv. Der Designer von The Golden Shape schrieb in seinem Blog selbst, dass er unzufrieden mit den bisher erschienenen Modellen sei. Er hätte sich weniger einfache Farbschemata gewünscht. Den Nike VaporMax habe er sich deshalb als Vorlage für seine neuen Entwürfe ausgesucht, weil das Paar dazu in der Lage sei, die Welt von Manga-Autor Akira Toriyama besser festzuhalten.  

Zuerst wurde dem berühmten Saiyajin-Krieger Son Goku ein eigenes Design verpasst. So sieht der Dragon Ball Super x Nike Air VaporMax Goku aus:

Danach nahm der Künstler Gokus besten Feind in Angriff und designte den Dragon Ball Super x Nike Air VaporMax Vegeta. In dieser Kreation thematisiert der Designer farblich die Super Saiyajin Blue-Transformation. Der Unterschied zu dem anderen Modellen ist dabei klar: die bläuliche Färbung. Eine solche nehmen Haare und Pupillen an, wenn Anwender der Modifikation wie Son Goku und Vegeta in einem Kampf neue Kräfte bekommen.
